Reading financial statements when diligence clocks are running
Published for Connectapiflow learners · ~7 min read
Before you open the auditing app, spend a disciplined hour with the statements themselves. Diligence fails less often from missing a fancy dashboard and more often from skipping the story the P&L and balance sheet already tell.
Start with movement, not perfection
Compare the latest period against the prior year and against the stub period the seller prefers to highlight. Note where growth and margin diverge. Those deltas become your first folder priorities once you enter the financial auditing app for due diligence audit support.
Interrogate working capital claims early
Scan receivables aging language, inventory policy notes, and accrued expense lines. You are not testing yet—you are deciding which bridges deserve sampling tags first.
Write three questions before testing
Force yourself to draft three deal-risk questions in plain language. Paste them into the binder cover note. Reviewers who skip this step often test efficiently in the wrong direction.
Connectapiflow’s Due Diligence Audit Fundamentals course practices this sequence with timed drills so the habit survives real calendars.
